Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from Belleville, Illinois, has been identified by police as the shooter at Wednesday morning’s Republican congressional baseball practice. “This is a tragedy which I hope does not happen again”, Duncan said in the statement.
Officers shot Hodgkinson, and President Donald Trump said the gunman died.

“I am relieved to hear that my friend and colleague Steve Scalise is in stable condition, and am continuing to monitor any news on the three other staff and security members who were shot in this morning’s attack”, said IL congressman Darin LaHood. “Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values”.
Congressman Steve Scalise – the number three Republican in the House of Representatives and a strong supporter of United States gun rights – underwent surgery after being shot in the left hip.
Capitol Hill Police officers reacted immediately against the attack on Republicans.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-Tenn., said the shooting occurred at the field where the Republican baseball team practices. Hodgkinson was shot by Capitol Police and died from his injuries.
In the hours after the attack in Alexandria, Virginia, a picture began to emerge of a shooter with a mostly minor arrest record who worked as a home inspector and despised the Republican Party.
Watson said the deputy on Wednesday recalled Hodgkinson as being “very cordial”. “We started giving him the liquids, I put pressure on his wound in his hip”.
Davis, who was not hurt, said on a conference call Wednesday that he’s concerned about how people discuss politics.
Hodgkinson had a series of encounters with police including one this year in which he was told to stop shooting his gun in the woods, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.
“We are strongest when we are unified, and when we work together for the common good”. Hodgkinson actively criticized Republican policies and members of the GOP.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports Hodgkinson attended SIU-Edwardsville in the early 1970’s, but did not complete his degree.
A deputy responded shortly after 3:05 p.m. and found that Hodgkinson “did have in his possession a valid Illinois FOID [firearms owner identification] card”, and that the deputy advised Hodgkinson “to not discharge his weapon in the area”. But she says he sold items from his business and told her he was going to Washington.
In 2002, the paper said, the Hodgkinsons assumed legal guardianship of their 12-year-old great niece. At the end of a year ago, this same James T. Hodgkinson left his job as a “Home Inspector, Mold/Air Quality Tester”, according to the Facebook page.
One woman who asked not to be named told Reuters that Hodgkinson had contacted her via Facebook as part of a political discussion, but that he subsequently commented on her page that Clinton was a “liar” and a “baby killer”. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had “no indication” Hodgkinson knew about the ball practice ahead of time.
