“Andy was huge tonight again. They choose to fight”, Boucher said.

“That’s fine with us”. The Lightning, with Mathieu Garon and Dwayne Roloson splitting the net warily, missed the playoffs the next season and Boucher was sacked the year after that.

“We lost in a way that we didn’t want to lose”, captain Erik Karlsson said of the Sunday defeat before Tuesday’s game.

The Senators snapped an 0-of-29 scoreless drought on the power play with a 5-on-3 goal to tie the game in the second period and got a brilliant performance from Craig Anderson, who made 45 saves, including 22 of 23 Pittsburgh shots in the second period. “They’re the ones that are favoured”, winger Mike Hoffman, who scored the third-period victor Tuesday, told reporters in Ottawa before the club left. “I mean, it doesn’t matter, you play against Ottawa or Washington. we like that, like it’s our life, our hockey life”. And as Olympic coach Mike Babcock said in Sochi, “Everyone evaluates Sid on scoring and I evaluate Sid on winning”. “I was just waiting for (Fred) Claesson, he did a good job kicking it out to me and driving through their (defence), I paused for a second to give a little more time to clear that lane on the far side and (Murray) didn’t see it”.

The Capitals appeared on the verge of another unceremonious exit at the hands of the Penguins going into the third period of Game 5.

A shift of that magnitude isn’t likely to reoccur, but it did illustrate what the Penguins are hoping to do against an Ottawa defensive scheme that takes away opponents’ transition games.

“The moment I got yanked in that game”.

The Ottawa coach opted for a half-hour practice ahead of Game 6 on Tuesday night to help his team “refresh” and “reload” after a 7-0 beating by Pittsburgh, one of the worst losses in team playoff history. “The other day in the room, we had Burrows talk, even if he’s injured”. The list of active players who have averaged at least a point per game in the playoffs in at least 20 games: Crosby (1.11), Malkin, (1.08), and Mike Cammalleri, who had 32 very productive playoff games between 2008 and 2011.

Then MacArthur said the Sens wanted to “bore them out of the building” on Thursday night. “It’s wonderful what not holding on the puck will do”. He has five points in his past four playoff games. We’ve got to regroup, but we did a lot of good things.

Pittsburgh could have buried the Sens in the second period but Anderson was the difference. The Senators bounced back to stay alive, and now, Boucher said, the plan is to stick to a familiar approach – trying to frustrate the Penguins with their defence rather than playing head-to-head versus a team Boucher admitted is the best there is.

The past two games might be the best way to sum Anderson up.

The Pens looked to have opened the scoring just over three minutes into the second, but Trevor Daley was deemed to have interfered with Anderson following an Ottawa challenge.

“You can’t change what happens in the past”, Anderson said, still looking dialled in about a half-hour after the horn sounded.

On the first shot he faced, Scott Wilson snuck one through Anderson’s wickets from behind the goal line. Winning money is winning money so if it’s a victor take a shot.
