To fully comprehend why it was perfectly OK that Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel was yelling at teammates, at himself, at anyone who would listen after returning to the bench following each shift in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals, you need to understand his motives. “I try to talk to the guys when they come by”.

The Senators look to win game three of this series and preserve home ice for themselves as they stole game one and had chances to win game two, but now they are back at the Canadian Tire Centre and should be considered a favourite to win at least one game at home. The 25-year-old Rust has five goals in 14 playoff games.

“We simply have to be better”. “We worked hard to get here”, Ottawa’s Marc Methot said”.

“I think we learned a few things”, center Tom Pyatt said.

Rust headed to the locker room after a crunching hit from Dion Phaneuf in the first period, while Schultz was injured after crashing into the boards following contact with Mike Hoffman.

Game 2 is in Pittsburgh Monday, when the defending Stanley Cup champions will be hoping to even up the best-of-seven series before it heads north of the border. It’s tough when you give up that many goals in the first period.

“I think it was just the patience”, Fleury said of what he saw from his crease. When they eventually got going late, Fleury was more than up to the task.

In December, the Penguins poured in eight goals in a hectic, wide-open victory at home against Ottawa.

Kessel’s chirping was the story of the postgame, with Mike Sullivan chalking it up to his desire to win, adding, “I think the rest of our team gets a kick out of him”. But why the Penguins must rely so much on resilience at this juncture of the playoffs puzzled Cullen. “He’s giving us a chance every night, and he’s stealing them for us”. He wasn’t tested a whole lot, though he did make a couple of good glove saves off Kessel and Carter Rowney in the second.

He was replaced by Murray, who made his first appearance in goal since April 6. By the time Smith undressed Fleury and scored a wraparound goal to make it 4-0, it was obvious Sullivan had to do something to stop the bleeding. The Penguins won 1-0.

Streit would be getting his first playoff action with Pittsburgh. “We’ve got guys who are invested and want to win”. “We approach it with the same mentality, and hopefully that’s something that will help us out with the situation we’re in now”. “After the game, we were fine”. We can certainly question the wisdom of trying to “Katy bar the door” for most of the game, but they frustrated the Penguins top scorers quite adeptly-especially Phil Kessel. “They won a year ago and we expect them to bounce back”. Those three goals came in a span of 2:18, a new franchise record in the playoffs.

This is the fifth playoff series between the clubs with Pittsburgh winning three of the previous four, including the last three. Washington is also 9-2 in its last 11 road games.

Don’t get me wrong I’ve got huge favorite bias here. “We competed, we did the little things we needed to do, we were physical by being poised with the puck”. We play the way we play whether it’s overtime or the third period or we’re leading or we’re trailing, we just really keep the same approach, so it’s been healthy for us, but to say that we have this great solution in overtime, that would be absolutely wrong to say that. “We have to leave the rink tonight and get ready for the next one”.
